Porto Cálem is one of the highest awareness Port Wine brands, among more than 40 others. Almost all Portuguese families know Porto Cálem as recognized market leader in this country.

Founded in 1859, by António Alves Cálem, Porto Cálem was at this time dedicated only to wine exports to Brazil in exchange of exotic woods and by means of its own fleet. In fact, those activities are still remembered today through Porto Cálem's brand logotype where a caravel stands for this proud history.

Porto Cálem was kept in the family for four generations, always developing business around quality Port wines, from which resulted their high recognition all over the world.

Today, and since 1998, Porto Cálem is part of Sogevinus SGPS, S.A.
The Sogevinus Group handles a large number of companies that dedicate their activity to the production and trade of Port and D.O.C. Douro Wines. It also invests in vineyards to ensure high quality standards in the wines produced.
Porto Cálem Vintages results from exceptionally good crops from a single year, such as the ones of 1983, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2003, referred to as “Classical Years" due to the high quality grapes obtained in ideal climate conditions.

After 2 years in oak barrels, Vintage Port wines are bottled in their cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, at the Douro riverside. The Vintage improves and ages in the bottle for decades, and should be kept horizontally, in a dark, dry aired place, enhancing its true character throughout the times.
Vintage Port should be drunk with a minimum of 8 years old, but it can be appreciated with more than 50 years.
