2008 Pagos de Moncayo, Zaragoza, Spain, Campo de Barjo D.O.
Located in Spain’s north-western province of Zaragoza, about 320 km west of Barcelona, the Campo de Borja D.O. is close to the south of Navarra and of the Ebro River. Campo de Borja D.O. is an area rich in winemaking history, and is now poised to emerge as a region for quality Spanish wines in the Twenty-first Century.
The rugged mountainous area is delimited by the snow-capped Sierra del Moncayo Mountains and the vineyard located between 350 and 700 meters in elevation.
There’s an "extreme continental" climate (cold winters and hot summers with an annual maximum and minimum difference of 40° C) marked by widely contrasting day and night temperatures. The area’s soils are poor and composed of brown, limey, calcareous, sandy limestone soil that is well drained and porous, rich in organic matter and nutrients.
All stages of viticulture and vinification are carried out by hand maximising the expressiveness and personality of the final wines, which remain totally true to their “terroir”.
Although Bodegas Pagos de Moncayo is a young Bodega, six years old, it works only with vines older than 80 years old. These vines and vineyards are family owned by father and son for many, many years; the Aibar family.
