2006 Riesling, Côtes de Rouffach - Rieflé, Elzas, France, Alsace

Members of the Rieflé family and employees at the Domaine RIEFLE derive a lot of pleasure from living at Pfaffenheim in the Alsace,  and enabling you to share their enthusiasm for their work that protects and cares for this exceptional environment.

The vineyards are managed in almost the same way as a garden would be, so that the link between the terroir and each wine is given careful attention.  To achieve this, we have re-introduced ploughing and mechanically working the soil in order to encourage deep rooting, in better contact with trace elements and minerals contained in the soil.

L’AOC ALSACE CÔTE DE ROUFFACH is located to the south of the Alsace winegrowing region on east-facing slopes of the villages of Pfaffenheim, Rouffach and Westhalten.  This zone belongs to an area of geological fracture caused 50 million years ago by the subsidence of the former mountain range of the Vosges-Black Forest.  It is protected from oceanic prevailing winds by the high peaks of the Vosges mountains.  These mountain terroirs, predominantly comprised of limestone, give powerfulness, warmth and mineralogy to the wines they produce.

It’s a good example of what a Riesling can offer in balance between mineralogy and fruitiness produced on a soil of clay and limestone. It’s a wine with a high potential of aging which will even be favourable in reflecting the advantages of the terroir.
