2009 La Réserve de Picque Caillou, Bordeaux, France, Pessac-Léognan

Château Picque Caillou is situated at the gates of the city of Bordeaux, in the heart of the historic cradle of the Pessac-Léognan. Its nearest neighbours are the prestigious chateaux Haut-Brion and Pape Clement. This evocative name of the vineyard stands for the rocky terroir, due to the floods of the Garonne during the last thousands of years.
In 2007, Professor Denis Dubourdieu and Valérie Lavigne, winemakers, joined the team with their rigorous technical assistance. Thus was born a wine of high lineage, a remarkable balance and delicacy, very representative of the values of the prestigious Pessac- Léognan appellation.

It is a vineyard of 21 hectares (20 acres 1 hectare in red in white). The soil contains a web of serious Pyrenean pebbles of the Gunz type. The average age of the vines is 25 years with a planting density of 6 900 to 10 000 plants per hectare.

The harvest is manual with strict selection in the vineyard. Alcoholic fermentation and maceration at controlled temperature (25°- 28°) takes place in stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation happens in stainless steel as well. It is followed by 12 months of ageing in barrels, for 30% new.

The Reserve Picque Caillou Rouge, the second wine, accounts for 30 000 to 45 000 bottles.
